The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), under Intercontinental Exchange, Inc., has unveiled plans to extend weekday trading hours on its NYSE Arca equities exchange, potentially allowing trading for 22 hours a day. This expansion, pending approval from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), would make all U.S.-listed stocks, ETFs, and closed end funds available during these extended hours.

If approved, the new trading schedule would run from 1:30 AM to 11:30 PM Eastern Time, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. NYSE Arca, known for its all-electronic trading environment, leads the U.S. market for listing and trading exchange-traded funds (ETFs).

Kevin Tyrrell, NYSE’s Head of Markets, emphasized the significance of this expansion, noting that “the NYSE’s initiative to extend U.S. equity trading to 22 hours a day, 5 days a week highlights the robustness of our U.S. capital markets and the rising global demand for access to our listed securities.”

Extended Trading Hours Await SEC Approval

The NYSE plans to submit revised rules to the SEC to support this new schedule. All trades executed during these extended hours will be processed by the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC), which itself has announced plans to extend its operating hours to align with the new trading window.

In addition, the NYSE is seeking collaboration from U.S. securities information processors to facilitate smooth operations during the extended trading period. Tyrrell highlighted that as a primary player in U.S. capital markets, the NYSE aims to provide more global access to U.S.-listed companies and funds through expanded exchange-based trading options.
